Events: London, UK: Rules: Convention, Science and Mathematics in a search for a visual language, 11 Sep 2007, 18:00 - 19:30

An LKL Maths-Art seminar by Natalie Dower. Coherence requires rules based on knowledge, but with rapid dissemination of new information between disciplines the visual language to be used is, more than it ever was, the choice of the individual. This talk will cover some examples of interdisciplinary influence, particularly work based on the Dudeney Dissection, and will give consideration of appreciation and deconstruction of visual images by the viewer. Natalie Dower trained at St Martin’s, Camberwell and the Slade.

Events: London, UK: The Patient's Tale, 13 Sep 2007 19.00-20.30

How stories make sense of suffering. In recent years we have seen a striking increase in the publication of 'patients' tales'. Why are sufferers and carers so keen to write and the public so keen to read? What can literature reveal that science can't explain? Join our guests as they talk about the current vogue for stories of illness and their place in medical health. Speakers: Michael Blastland, broadcaster and journalist and author of Joe, about his severely autistic son; Francesca Happé, Cognitive Psychologist, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London. The first in a series of four events exploring medicine and literature. Further events on 11 October, 8 November and 13 December.

Events: London, UK: Public Experiment: Colour, 5 Oct 2007, 19:00- 21:00

'Every model shows a different degree of representation, but all are real. We need to acknowledge that all spaces are steeped in political and individual intentions, power relations and desires that function as models of engagement with the world. No space is model-free.’ Olafur Eliasson This event investigates how we individually and collectively model and remodel our surroundings. The focus will be ‘the production of reality’, as architects, scientists and artists devise and perform hand-held experiments that investigate the physicality and perception of space.

Events: London, UK: Public Experiment: Colour, 5 Oct 2007, 19:00- 21:00

‘The experience of colour is a matter of cultivation. As much as the senses and perception are linked with memory and recognition, our relation to colour is closely derived from our cultural habitat.’ Olafur Eliasson Architects, scientists and artists devise and perform hand-held experiments that explore the perception of colour and how it is determined by environment, memory, subjectivity and emotion.
