Events: Norwich, UK: Making faces, 2 Sep 2006 - 30 Sep 2006
The exhibition has at its core a body of commissioned artwork from three UK artists, Simon Tegala, Alexa Wright and Keith Piper, who will focus on issues including identity, ethnicity, beauty, face reconstruction and recognition. They have been interacting during the year with a panel of leading UK scientists working on various aspects of face biology. Areas of concern will include how faces are made in the womb, how neural activity in our brains allows us to identify and understand faces and their associated expressions and transformations and how we construct gender, age, and ethnicity from a glance. The Making Faces exhibition is a partnership between the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society, the John Innes Centre, the Teacher Scientist Network and the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts.

Publications: Book: Engaging Science: Thoughts, deeds, analysis and action
In July 2006, the Wellcome Trust published "Engaging Science: Thoughts, deeds, analysis and action", which features essays on a variety of topics within public engagement with science in the UK, and includes case studies of projects funded by the Trust. It includes a chapter by Stephen Webster of Imperial College London, "Art, Science and the Public" where he argues that art-science interactions have reached a "critical mass", but that the chief impact has been on the creation of new art and its ability to stimulate new thinking in audiences, rather than shifting science from its current ways of working. He outlines some of the possible benefits of art-science interactions to both art and science, and concludes that "the place of art in science is now secure."
Individual chapters of the book are available as PDF files online, or the book may be ordered free from the Wellcome Trust.
