The Dennis Rosen Memorial Trust Newsletter: January 2006
Welcome to the Dennis Rosen Memorial Trust Newsletter, which features news of the work of the Trust, and news on science-art interactions in the UK and internationally, including events, publications, grant schemes and other initiatives that are within the remit of the Trust.

You can't give the one you love your heart. But you can grow them a ring from your bone tissue. Jewellery from lab-grown bone-tissue cultured from human cells is now a reality. The artists and material scientists behind the concept, plus a couple who donated tissue cells for the creation of their wedding rings, will reveal the secrets behind the project.

Events, London: Call for proposals: Bridges, 4-8 August 2006
The Bridges Conference: Mathematical Connections in Art, Music, and Science and Architecture Institute of Education / London Knowledge Lab. Created in 1998 and running annually since, brings together mathematicians, scientists, artists, architects, educators, musicians, writers, computer scientists, sculptors, dancers, weavers, and model builders together in a lively atmosphere of mutual exchange an encouragement. Important components of these conferences, apart from formal presentations, are gallery displays of visual art, working sessions with practitioners and artists who are crossing the mathematics-arts boundaries, and evening musical and theatrical events.
Contributed papers for reviewing process are due by February 1, 2006.

Publications: DVD: Pioneers in Art and Science: Art, Poetry and Particle Physics
Ken McMullen’s extraordinary new film sees John Berger travelling to CERN in Geneva for a wide-ranging and provocative series of discussions and collaborations with the experimental and theoretical physicists Michael Doser and John March Russell. In Ken McMullen’s engaging and accessible film, he travels to the world’s biggest particle physics laboratory at CERN in Geneva to confront physicists with poetry. The film charts an extraordinary and wide-ranging series of discussions and collaborations between Berger and the leading theoretical and experimental physicists John March Russell and Michael Doser. This DVD was generously supported by the University of the Arts London and the European Commission, and commissioned and funded by Arts Council England through its Pilot Publications and Recordings Programme as part of its Pioneers in Art and Science initiative.

Funding: Wellcome Trust Sciart, deadline 28 April 2006
The Wellcome Trust Sciart programme is offering up to £500 000 in 2006 to further support and encourage innovative arts projects investigating biomedical science and its social contexts. R&D Awards (up to £15 000) aim to support the development of collaborative project ideas or the delivery of small-scale productions. Production Awards (up to £120 000) will be made to projects that aim to make a significant impact on the public's engagement with biomedical science. Applicants must be based in the UK or the Republic of Ireland and the activity must take place in the UK or Republic of Ireland. The next deadline for Production Award applications is 28 April 2006.
