Rosen Trust news: In the company of animals, 29 November 2005, 19:00, the Ri, London, UK

The Rosen Trust is pleased to announce that the next event in partnership with the Ri, as part of its RiArt programme, will feature acclaimed artists Olly & Suzi, conservationist Tony Fitzjohn and animal behaviourist Dawn Hawkins, "In the company of animals". Chaired by animal studies researcher Dr Steve Baker, the event will explore how each of them conceive of the animals they work with. Are animals their subjects or their collaborators? How can each of them contribute to keeping species from disappearing from the wild, and what can artists, scientists and conservationists learn by listening to each other’s viewpoints?

For further details on the event, visit http://www.rosentrust.org.uk/events_reports.html
Tickets cost £8, £5 for Ri Members and concessions, and are available now from

Events: Cambridge, UK, From DNA to the Canterbury Tales, 12 Oct 2005, 19:00

The accumulation of mutations in DNA sequences over a billion years can be used to trace early events in the evolution of cells, that gave rise to structures like mitochondria and chloroplasts, with some surprising conclusions (e.g. that the malaria parasite has a photosynthetic ancestry). Remarkably, the same methods can also be used to study the evolution of texts such as "The Canterbury Tales" as
they were copied by medieval scribes.

Initiatives: SciTalk seeking scientists to click with writers

NESTA-funded project SciTalk will facilitate personal contact between scientists and writers - poets, playwrights and novelists. If you are a scientist interested in explaining what you do and why, you are invited to take part in the early stages of this innovative and experimental venture.

Initiatives: engineeringArt: Network and Materials Library

Network of artists, designers and architects to collaborate with materials scientists to set a research agenda for designing new materials in the 21st century. Joining the Network is free.
A library of more than 300 materials specialising in new and advanced prototype materials collected from research labs all round the world. Most of these materials would never normally be in the public arena, but instead are buried in a mobile phone or an inkjet printer or in the fuselage of a jet aircraft. The ideal of the materials library is to allow the arts community access to the fruits of publicly funded materials science research.
